Important: The 14-day rule varies by land
After your stay limit, you must move outside the area managed by the same field office — typically a minimum of 25 miles is recommended, though BLM regulations say "outside the area" without specifying a distance. Read our 14-Day Rule guide for the actual regulation language and how enforcement works.
How the 14-Day Rule Works
Federal land camping limits (14 days is most common) reset after you've been away from the area long enough — typically 28 days away, though this also varies by field office. The rule is designed to prevent any single person from permanently occupying public land.
For boondockers doing a seasonal circuit, the practical strategy is: 14 days at Site A → move to Site B (25+ miles away) for 14 days → move to Site C for 14 days → by the time you've done a rotation, you can return to Site A. A 3-site rotation with 14 days each gives you 42 days of coverage in one region without violating any limits.
