Free Overnight Parking for RVs

The parking lot option — not as scenic as Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land, but invaluable as a travel night rest stop between boondocking destinations. Here's what's actually available, how to confirm before you arrive, and the etiquette that keeps these spots accessible for everyone.

Community Information Disclaimer

Overnight parking policies change without notice. A store or casino that allowed RVs last year may have banned them this month. Always call ahead and confirm with store management before planning to stay overnight. This information is community-reported and is not guaranteed to be current or accurate.

Walmart

Walmart has no national policy on overnight RV parking — each store manager decides. Approximately 60–70% of Walmart stores allow overnight parking; the remainder prohibit it due to local ordinances, lease restrictions (many Walmart stores lease their parking lots and can't grant permissions), or past problems.

How to confirm: Call the store (not corporate) and ask to speak with the store manager or assistant manager. Ask directly: "Do you allow overnight RV parking?" If yes, ask how many nights and where in the lot. Never assume — the greeter at the door doesn't make this decision and often doesn't know the policy.

Etiquette that keeps spots open:

  • Park in the far corner of the lot, away from customer parking and the store entrance
  • Do not put out slides, awnings, chairs, or tables — this is a parking spot, not a campsite
  • No generators running after 10 PM
  • Shop at the store — you're their customer using their lot
  • Leave no trash; pick up any trash near your spot
  • One night only — two-night stays in Walmart lots are the quickest path to a no-parking policy

Cracker Barrel

Cracker Barrel has a widely-reported policy of allowing one night of free RV parking at most locations — the chain actively courts RV travelers as customers. Policy: self-contained RVs only, one night, no hookups, no camping setup (slides in, no chairs outside).

How to confirm: Same protocol — call the specific location, not corporate. Ask for the manager. Policy can vary by location, especially in urban areas with parking constraints. The Cracker Barrel app and website list locations; many have noted their RV parking status in traveler reviews.

Why Cracker Barrel works: The company deliberately positions itself as RV-friendly because the demographic overlap between Cracker Barrel customers and RV travelers is near-total. Use the restaurant, buy some items at the store, and you've earned your spot twice over.

Flying J / Pilot Travel Centers

Pilot Flying J locations along the Interstate system are designed for overnight trucker stops and accommodate RVs as well. Most locations have dedicated RV parking areas (sometimes fee-based at $10–20/night, sometimes free). Shower facilities available for purchase ($12–15). Dump stations often on-site ($20–25 without fuel purchase; free or discounted with fuel fill-up).

The Pilot Flying J app shows amenities by location including RV parking status and dump station availability. Worth downloading before any cross-country transit.

Casinos

Many casinos — particularly in Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and along I-40 and I-10 corridors — offer free RV parking in exchange for being a customer. Policy varies enormously. Some provide free hookups; some provide dry camping; some charge $10–30/night; some prohibit overnight stays entirely.

Native American casinos along Southwestern highway corridors have historically been among the most RV-welcoming. Always call ahead — policies change with management and local regulations.

Other Free Overnight Options

Cabela's / Bass Pro Shops

Many locations allow overnight RV parking — same call-ahead protocol as Walmart. Self-contained, no camping setup. Shop at the store.

Home Depot / Lowe's

Some locations allow RVs in corner parking areas. Less consistent than Walmart. Call ahead.

Truck stops (non-chain)

Independent truck stops often have RV-friendly overnight policies and sometimes have hookups for a small fee.

Rest areas

Legal for overnight stays in some states (AZ, NV, OR commonly cited), illegal in others (CA, TX, VA). Check state DOT rules for each state on your route. Time limits typically 8–10 hours.

Welcome centers

State welcome centers on Interstate highways allow overnight parking in most states — a quieter, more scenic option than truck stops. Usually 24-hour restrooms.
